Is there an average energy cost per year per square foot for a ranch home in the Milwaukee area?

There is not really an average, but an energy evaluation may help.

Back when most homes were built and insulated in a similar fashion, it would have been possible to calculate an “average energy cost per year, per square foot.” But, because homes have been retrofitted with air sealing, additional insulation, energy efficient heating and cooling systems, new windows and more (i.e. appliances and other electrical amenities), there is a wide diversity of those costs. Two ranch-style homes, built side-by-side, by the same builder to the approximate same size can have wildly different energy costs. One way to find out how efficient (or inefficient) your home is would be to have a home energy rating conducted by a consultant partnering with Home Performance with ENERGY STAR®. The rating will provide a numerical “score” for your home and recommendations for improvements.
