I would like to maintain an insulated 385-square-foot log cabin above freezing. Would an IR heater be a good choice?
An IR would likely be okay if it had a fan for convection.
If you want to maintain a temperature below 50 degrees, your cheapest option will likely be an 80 percent AFUE natural gas or propane furnace (you will not want to use a condensing gas furnace at such a low temperature, i.e. one with an AFUE higher than 85 percent). However, an 80 percent AFUE furnace may not be available in a size small enough for the cabin. When choosing an electric heater, they all have about the same efficiency but will heat in different ways. An IR would likely be okay if it had a fan for convection.
