I am going to be building a house and was wondering your recommendation on window brands, reasonably priced, and efficient. Figured I'd ask, seeing as though you'd be a neutral opinion, and not a contractor.

Whatever you choose, make sure it is an ENERGY STAR!

To help make it easier for homeowners to make informed choices about windows, the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) was established as a non-profit organization that administers the only uniform, independent rating and labeling system for the energy performance of windows, doors, skylights, and attachment products. Their goal is to provide fair, accurate, and reliable energy performance ratings. The NFRC has fact sheets available on their Web site that can provide you with lot of information. Another good information source is the Efficient Windows Collaborative. Consumer Reports also has some information and comments about the different types of windows available, such as wood, fiberglass and vinyl.

Because I do not know what you consider to be “reasonably priced”, I cannot comment on that aspect of your question. Also, brand names become that intangible thing that comes down to personal preference. Some brands offer features and benefits not offered by other window manufacturers. Whatever manufacturer and type of window you choose, make sure it has earned the ENERGY STAR. ENERGY STAR qualified windows help lower energy bills and save you money over single-pane and even new double-paned, clear-glass windows. Estimated savings vary from region to region depending on current heating and cooling costs and are generally greatest where there are hot summers, cold winters or both.
