My new ENERGY STAR qualified dishwasher runs for at least twice as long as my old dishwasher. How is that saving energy?
It runs longer because it's more energy efficient! No kidding!
Though it seems counterintuitive, the reason that today's dishwashers have longer cycle lengths is because they are more energy efficient. The energy efficiency of a dishwasher is largely determined by the amount of hot water it uses. Older dishwashers sprayed large amounts of hot water on dishes in a short period of time. Today's dishwashers, use targeted fine streams of water to clean dishes. To effectively clean the dishes, more time is needed.
