There are several things to consider when buying a new furnace.
When shopping for that new energy efficient furnace, Focus on Energy recommends that you:
- Look for a furnace that has an Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) of 90% or higher.
- Get a furnace with a "smart motor" or electronically commutated motor (ECM) so that the electrical portion of the furnace is also efficient.
- Ask the heating contractor to perform a heat loss analysis which will determine a suitable size for your furnace.
- As with all large purchases, shop around for price and ask the contractor the services they provide after the furnace is installed.
- Keep in mind that a drafty and under-insulated home may still contribute to high heating bills even if the furnace is new.
- Always look for the ENERGY STAR!
