I plan to install a gas insert in an existing wood-burning fireplace. The existing fireplace has a wood stove inserted into the opening and is vented through the tiled flue. Should I go ahead with this plan or stay with what I have now? The gas would have a 65 or 77 AFUE efficiency rating.

It depends on how you are going to use the fireplace.

It will depend on how you are going to use the fireplace. If you are going to be using it for heating, the insert will not give you the cost savings of a 90 percent AFUE or higher furnace or a new replacement fireplace. If the fireplace is more for decoration than utility make your decision based on safety, convenience, and appearance. Make sure you turn off the fireplace and close the flue when not in use.
