What water heater can I get that vents out the side of the house like my furnace does?
A power-vent water heater can.
A power-vented water heater can vent out the side of a home just like a high-efficiency furnace. Power venting uses a fan to assure proper exhaust of combustion gases, mostly water vapor and carbon dioxide, through the side wall of the home. Without power venting there is the potential that the combustion products can accumulate in the home, causing damage and illnesses.
Another option is a direct-vent water heater. Direct venting uses both an intake and exhaust duct to move combustion gases through the side wall of the home. Direct venting reduces the chance of exhaust gases remaining in the home.
Focus on Energy offers Cash-Back Rewards for power-vented water heaters with an energy factor (EF) of 0.64 or greater. Increased rewards are also available for power-vented water heaters with higher energy factors and condensing water heaters.
