Is it energy efficient to turn my gas forced air furnace on during cool fall nights and off during the day when it's warmer or is it better to just leave it on? Will it damage my system?

Turn the furnace down not off!

Don't turn it off, turn it down. Lower the set point on your thermostat in the winter and raise the set point in the summer to save money. By "setting back” the temperature you will keep the furnace from running and reduce the amount of heat transferred out of the house and into the cold. A programmable thermostat can make this more convenient by automatically changing set points to match your schedule. View our tips on saving money and energy this winter.
