My home has two heating systems: an oil-fired boiler for a hydronic baseboard heating system, and an oil-fired forced-air furnace that serves the older parts of the home. Both units need to be replaced. What are the relative efficiencies and operating costs of replacing these oil-fired units with natural gas versus propane units?
Natural gas may be the most cost-effective.
Natural gas, if available, has a history of being the most cost-effective way to heat your home in Wisconsin. Furnaces and boilers are readily available with higher efficiencies in natural gas and propane than available for oil: 90% or greater for natural gas/propane units versus 85% for oil. The actual operating costs will vary depending on the cost of oil and propane , which can vary considerably, and your heating habits.
