My furnace is in a small room with laundry room there are two floor registers, do I have to keep both open?

Closing registers can mean potential problems!

Closing vents will cause the blower motor to either:

  1. draw more energy to ramp up and push the air through the remaining duct work, thereby consuming extra energy, or
  2. distribute less air which can affect the comfort level of the rest of the home.

In some cases the restricted airflow can also affect the performance and lifetime of the equipment. The minor energy savings potential of closing the registers is not great enough to merit the potential problems of closing off ductwork.
