What is an ECM motor?

An ECM is a fan motor typically found in high efficiency furnaces.

An ECM (Electronically Commutated Motor) is a fan motor typically found in high efficiency furnaces. They may also be called variable speed motors or brushless DC motors. ECMs typically use 30% less electricity than a conventional furnace fan. Keep in mind that just because a furnace has a 90%+ AFUE rating does not necessarily mean it has an ECM. Conversely, just because a furnace has an ECM does not necessarily mean it is 90%+ AFUE.
