I just bought a new furnace and my contractor told me to run the fan continuously but that seems like it would waste energy. Will I really save energy by running the fan all the time?
No, you won't save money running the furnace fan continuously.
Depending on your home's layout and ductwork, there is a chance you may notice a more regulated temperature if you run your fan continuously. But, running the fan continuously will always use more electricity than setting the fan to auto. Even though newer technologies, such as variable speed motors, allow the fan to draw a small amount of power when running continuously, by running it 24/7 that small amount of power can add up to a significant amount of energy and money.
