Should we be concerned about air sealing the part of the house wall that is attached to the garage?

Yes, attached garages can be a major source of indoor air pollutants.

Good question. Attached garages can be a major source of indoor air pollutants, most notably carbon monoxide. Even if a car is driven from the garage immediately after startup, very high levels of exhaust remain. What’s more, attached garages are frequently used to store household chemicals and other toxins. Additionally, high levels of moisture can build up as snowy vehicles are pulled into the garage, which can also find its way into the home and lead to indoor air quality issues. Focus on Energy recommends addressing the area where the house meets the attached garage as a top priority. Our Home Performance with ENERGY STAR Program can help you out.
