I have a wood sided house that needs repairs. I want to get siding, cellulose insulation blown in, and new windows. I want to maximize energy efficiency. Is one type of siding best? I hope there is a simple answer. Thanks, Tom

This is the perfect time to make energy improvements.

If you're remodeling, it's the perfect time to include energy saving measures. The type of siding is not a major energy concern as all siding is merely cladding (something that covers or overlays the home). You have a golden opportunity to remove the existing wood siding to expose the existing exterior sheathing. It is the perfect time to have the sidewall cavities dense-packed with cellulose. Consider adding ½”, ¾”, or 1” foam board over the existing sheathing after dense-packing the walls for additional insulation value as well as reduced air leakage. Taping the seams where the foam board meets is a good idea. If you decide to forego the foam board, consider using a good quality housewrap over the sheathing to reduce air leakage and provide a drainage plane for bulk water that will inevitably get behind the siding. When installing the housewrap, be sure the seams are overlapped and taped with high quality sheathing tape. This will also be the perfect time to properly install new windows.

You may also want to consider hiring a Home Performance with ENERGY STAR partnering consultant to come in and do an evaluation of the house when you start your project.
